The Wine

Primitivo is the Old World ancestor of Zinfandel, with deep roots in the sun-drenched hillsides of southern Italy — and on our volcanic hillside it finds an equally captivating expression. Dark and brooding yet surprisingly delicate, it opens with earthy, spiced aromas of dried herb and black pepper before lifting into raspberry, red plum, and violet. Its natural high acidity keeps everything lively and fresh, making it one of the most food-versatile wines we make. A discovery for anyone who thinks they know Zinfandel.

The Vineyard

Interplanted among the original 1982 Zinfandel since 1997, on the same red volcanic Boomer Loam hillside at nearly 1,000 feet.

The Winemaking

Aged 18 months in American oak, a third of it new — a lighter touch that lets the variety’s spice and acidity lead. 14.9% alcohol.

Food Pairing

Tomato-based pasta. Carbonara. Wild mushroom risotto. Eggplant parmigiana.
