As unique as my dad is, (he's the one holding the bottle), he can't claim sole ownership of the name Barry Collier. And we know this for sure because in the last few years he's developed an unlikely but interesting friendship with another well-known Barry Collier. And this other Barry has a very cool story of his own.
The gentleman on the left, aka the other Barry Collier, is the Athletic Director of the Butler University Bulldogs in Indianapolis, Indiana. Interestingly, both Barrys have an athletic background. My dad played college baseball at the University of Maryland in the 60s, while the other Barry played college basketball at Butler in the 70s, and later went on to become the head basketball coach there and the University of Nebraska.
Both Barry's have ties to Northern California too. My dad has been a fulltime resident of Sonoma County since founding Collier Falls in 1996, and the other Barry spent time in Palo Alto as an assistant basketball coach at Stanford University in the late 1980s.
Of course, one of the coolest parts of the story is that our Collier Falls wine is what ultimately brought the two Barrys together. Nearly a decade ago when basketball Barry was the head coach at Nebraska, one of his friends discovered Collier Falls while wine tasting in Sonoma and ordered a bottle for the head coach. When coach Barry received his bottle of Collier Falls he was surprised and delighted to see it signed by another Barry Collier!
It turned out that Butler Barry Collier really loves wine and became a fan of ours, and he still continues to share bottles of Collier Falls with his friends and family. He and my dad stayed in touch over the years, but never officially met until a few weeks ago when the Bulldog A.D. was in town wine tasting and the two Barrys arranged a meeting. Here's a tweet from Butler University's Barry Collier:
And while I'll always be a UCLA Bruin at heart, I'm more than happy to call myself a Butler Bulldog fan as long as the athletic department is in the capable hands of none other than Barry Collier!
