Collier Falls VineyardPrivate Reserve
1997 Zinfandel

Winemaker Notes

"This wine shows intense aromas of raspberries and strawberries, followed by spice and vanillan oak components. On the palate, the fruit is very forward, tannins are soft and integrated, and the acidity is bright and balanced. Zinfandel like this is a pleasure to drink young while the fruit is still vibrant, but oak aging and structure ensure added complexity with several years of bottle age."

- Alex MacGregor, Winemaker

Two stars - A highly distinctive wine. Likely to be memorable. "Sweet oak lifts and enriches optimally ripened blackberry fruit in this weighty, but keenly balanced bottling, and, while a little warm at the finish, the wine finds its ample alcohol melding seamlessly with the attractive berryish themes that hold sway throughout. Firmed by a fine backbone of unintrusive tannins, it hangs on for a lengthy finish and should get better yet with a few years of cellaring."
Connoisseur's Guide, July 1999

"This is an intense wine with aromas of strawberries, followed by spice and vanillan oak components...Zinfandel like this wine is a pleasure, not only for the price, but for its added complexity and character."
The Wine House, Los Angeles

"Longtime Wally's customers Barry and Susan Collier purchased a 100 acre hillside property in 1997 from Don and Rhonda Carano of Ferrari-Carano Winery. The original eight acre Zinfandel vineyard on the property produced an instant success - Collier Falls' 1997 Zinfandel Private Reserve received the 1998 Dry Creek Valley Grand Prize! Winemaker Alex MacGregor was able to produce only 500 cases of this sensational raspberry and strawberry scented Zin. Knowing the right people has helped us acquire our fair share from this hot new producer."
Wally's, Los Angeles

"We'll first tell you about the Collier Falls 1997 Zinfandel since this wine is extremely limited in supply - only 500 cases produced - so you best act quickly to secure some...This first release for Collier Falls is a knockout. The wine shows intense aromas of ripe, dark cherries and sweet raspberries, followed by vanilla and nutmeg spice components from aging in American and French oak barrels. On the palate the wine is beautifully rich, lush and full-bodied...Get it while you can."
Draegers Epicures, San Mateo

19 points (of 20 possible)- The premier release from Barry Collier's 500 case Estate vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. Named after a sixty foot waterfall on the property, the vines are grown on rocky hillside terraces. A ripe raspberry nose, sweet entry with warm meaty, pepper laced cardamom spiced cherry."
Cannery Wine Cellar, San Francisco

"Another hot new player from this internationally acknowledged, quintessential Zin growing appellation, the Collier Falls is an out-and-out fruit bomb just loaded with tiers of Zin, blackberry, raspberry and black cherry flavors framed by muted spicy oak. Typical of the vintage, it is a deep, complex wine that will reward its owner with a perfectly balanced, huge mouthful of mature Zin fruit."
