2000 Zinfandel

Winemaker Notes

"This wine shows a fragrant rose petal and violet floral nose. The fruit is very forward with notes of raspberry liqueur and black currant. On the palate, this wine suggests sweet cherries, vanilla spice and liquorice. The well-integrated French and American oak provides a subtle toast with an elegant chocolate finish."

- Cécile Lemerle-Derbes, Winemaker

Accolades for our 2000 Zinfandel

91 'A highly distinctive wine likely to be memorable'
Agreeable from start to finish for its raspberry, cappuccino and vanilla aromas and flavors, this ripe, fairly concentrated, nicely fruity wine is broad and open on the palate with a nice fleshy texture and a firming edge of tannins for balance. Hints of spice and berry jam fill out the finish and contribute both richness and complexity. Certain to age famously for three to six years, but needing none of that to shine, this is one to reserve.

Top 100 Wines - San Francisco Chronicle 2002
Dense purple Zin, with lovely, jammy black fruit nose; full-bodied berry flavors, hints of pepper and spice.

87 points Concentrated and well-proportioned, and quite reliant on toasty oak for flavor, it nonethless packs in plenty of ripe strawberry, dried raspberry, spice and floral flavors. Ripe, firm tannins and nicely integrated toasty oak fold into the finish. Drink now through 2006. 1,500 cases made.
- Wine Spectator, September 2002

One of the vintage's most impressive wines, this dense purple-colored Zinfandel exhibits a glorious nose of jammy black fruits, pepper, and spice. Full-bodied, with sufficient fruit, glycerin, and extract to back up the lavish quantities of toasty new oak, this is a lush, plump, rich wine that cascades over the palate with no hard edges.
- Cannery Wine Cellars, San Francisco, July 2002

Complex and intensely flavored, in a full, ripe style. The wine has spicy, berry-like character, with evident oakiness on the finish.
- Restaurant Wine, July 2002

Barry and Susan Collier's hillside vineyard in the northwest corner of Sonoma's Dry Creek Valley is beginning to unveil its promise. The aromas of raspberry liqueur and black currants alone are worth the price of admission. Just wait till you taste it!
- Wally's, Los Angeles, November 2002

Medium to medium-dark ruby; pleasant, floral, spicy, fragrant raspberry and blackberry fruit aroma with notes of coffee and vanilla; medium-full body; big, forward, rich, chunky, chocolatey, mouth filling, ripe berry fruit flavors; full tannin; somewhat harsh on the finish; lingering aftertaste. Highly recommended.
- California Grapevine, July 2002

Lively, with jammy blackberry and raspberry flavors. Round and full. Notes of roasty oak, vanilla and sandalwood.
- Santa Rosa Press Democrat, May 2002

Most zin wineries tend to specialize in a particular region. My favorite zins come from Sonoma's Dry Creek valley. Still home to quite a few 80-plus-year-old vines, the Dry Creekers show crisp, raspberry flavors, elegantly wrapped in dusty cocoa. Best of the best: Collier Falls
- Wine Adviser, Seattle Times, July 2002

The juicy flavors of raspberry concentrate provide enough oomph to make this wine deliciously satisfying, without going over the top. It is chock full of mouth-watering Zinny flavors, with no harshness at all.
- The Wine Country, Signal Hill CA, August 2002

The 2000 Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, contains 2% petite sirah and was aged for 15 months in French and American oak, 33% new. It shows sweet cranberry, grape jelly, and sweet curants as both aromas and flavors. Some pepper and licorice are added at the back of the palate plus very light tannins and the wine finishes medium-broad and medium-long. The fruit is incredibly sweet which makes this a unique Zinfandel.
